"Vitamin E" is the collective name for a group of fat-soluble compounds with distinctive antioxidant activities . Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol) that have varying levels of biological activity . Although vitamin E has been known as an essential nutrient for reproduction since 1922, we are far from understanding the mechanisms of its physiological functions. Vitamin E is the term for a group of tocopherols and tocotrienols, of which alpha–tocopherol has the highest biological activity. Even though there are 8 forms of vitamin E, the most biologically active form of the vitamin is called alpha-tocopherol.

Therefore, Toc preparations which have a high Alpha-Toc content are suitable for health foods and vitamin E enrichment. Vitamin E is the generic descriptor for all tocopherol and tocotrienol derivatives exhibiting the biological activity of α-tocopherol. Primary dietary sources of vitamin E include vegetable oils, seeds, and cereal grains. Vitamin E is fat-soluble and requires micellularization for absorption. Vitamin E is a collective term used to describe 8 separate fat soluble antioxidants, most commonly alpha-tocopherol[A176104]. Vitamin E acts to protect cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of the body's metabolism.
